On February 29, 2000, Kayla Renee Rolland was at school with her first-grade classmates when one of them pulled out a small handgun. Dedrick Owens announced “I don’t like you” and shot Kayla. The bullet entered the 6-year-old’s arm and passed all the way through her tiny abdomen. After briefly grabbing her stomach in agony and struggling to breathe, Kayla died.
