On March 24, 2017, Jamie Neil Urton was driving with a coworker when two small children, 2 and 4 years old, wandered into the street. Jamie bumped the older child with his car; since the child wasn’t seriously hurt, Jamie’s passenger told him to keep making his way out of the neighborhood, which had a reputation for violence. But Jamie stopped, and the father of the children, Jamall Killings, approached the vehicle. He attacked Jamie, pulling him from the car and beating him while Jamie repeated “It’s an accident.” Another man named Deonte Baber ran into the street, told Jamie’s passenger “Get out of here, you’re black” and then sprayed the car with bullets. Jamie was struck in the thigh and bled to death.
