On March 7, 2009, Esme Louise Kenney went for a jog near her home. While she was out, Esme encountered a man named Anthony Kirkland, who attacked her. Anthony told the police, “I kicked her, punched her in the stomach. Kicked her and punched her. Stomped her.” He also sexually assaulted the 13-year-old before strangling her to death.
When Esme’s body was found, there were burns on her legs. According to the coroner, “he was hoping he could set the body on fire, then the brush would catch fire, destroying the evidence.”
