On March 18, 2016, Brian Mortensen was installing a fence at a daycare center. In a nearby apartment complex, an argument between Jakell Ward and his pregnant girlfriend ended with Jakell shooting at her as she drove away. Some of his stray bullets struck 32-year-old Brian in the chest and arm.
Seeing what he had accidentally done, Jakell offered his victim a few hundred dollars and a cup of water. But Brian, who had celebrated the birth of his first child just four days before the shooting, died of his injuries.
