On June 11, 1977, Jane Marie McManus was asleep on her living room couch in the early morning when a stranger, wandering past, saw her through the window. He robbed her. He raped her. He slashed her forehead with a knife. He stabbed her 15 times. He hit her with a hammer and strangled her with a belt. During his taped confession, Harold Otey stated “She was pleading with me to kill her. She said, ‘Kill me, kill me.’ OK, I figured, I went that far. Why not?”
